Getting to know mouse species
Unbeknown to the vast majority of our customers there are a number of different species of mice taking up residency in the UK. In general there are two types of mouse that dare to invade your home, one is the domestic house mouse and the other if field mouse or wood mouse as it is sometimes known. Establishing which type of rodent that has invaded your home will be useful as you start to think about eradicating the problem.
House mouse (Mus domesticus)
This species of mouse likes to live indoors where possible. It can easily adapt to live outdoors, particularly in warmer weather, but it feels right at home nesting in your home due to milder living conditions. Its fast, but should you spot one you’ll notice it has greyish, almost brownish fur with eyes and ears that seem to be in perfect proportion to its head.
Field mouse (Apodemus Sylvaticus)
In contrast to the house mouse a field mouse has chestnut coloured fur and more often than not it also has a white underbelly. Typically you find this species infiltrating properties in the rural locations although they can make their presence felt within city areas. Field mice are physically different to house mice. They have larger ears, bulging eyes and their tail is virtually the length of their body, in contrast to the house mouse.
Activity
Learning a little about the activity of mice can be a useful exercise. Mice are nocturnal creatures that prefer to nest during the day then scavenge for food and drink after dark. The peak times for activity are between sunset and sunrise when mice leave their nests to search for nourishment and water. Mice move around the home and leave a scent behind by rubbing their body against available surfaces. Their eyesight is poor but they have heightened hearing and an acute sense of smell, communicating with peers via chemicals and pheromones secreted via urine or special glands.
